Dolcetto D' Alba encompasses the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco, whose calcareous soils are suited to the early ripening grape. Dolcetto D'Alba has its own D.O.C. and is the most important zone in north-west Italy for the Dolcetto grape. Diano D'Alba is a separate D.O.C. within the larger area where the finest Dolcetto wines are produced. Diano is a hilltop village just south of Alba and the wines from this D.O.C. are all made by top Barolo and Barbaresco producers. Dolcetto is one of Italy's most charming native grapes, producing purple wines bursting at the seams with fruit.
