The Rioja region is situated in Northern Spain, south of the Sierra Cantabria and follows the Ebro river. Wine production here dates back to the 800’s and as is quite common in the Mediterranean wine culture it was pioneered by monks. Most Rioja is a blend of various grape varieties from more than one sub-region, but Tempranillo is the principal grape in most Rioja blends. Of the 4 styles of wine produced, the Reserva is heralded as the cream of the crop. The traditional aging process (a minimum of 12 months in 225 litre oak casks) enable the wine to acquire the aromas and flavours released by the tannins in the wood. This process is then completed in the bottle with the wine remaining at the Bodega for a minimum of 24 months.
